Description

:iconreadplz:
So I felt like drawing landscape art, not sure why, I just was in the mood to!
This was more of a doodle that I kind of kept going with, and I have to say that I'm happy with the result.

I didn't really use any fancy or new techniques in this, sorry :XD: So the description is gonna be pretty short!

Constructive criticism welcome!

:dummy: Long comment!

Well, we talked about having good comments, so I'll try and give a good one of help Natalie! ^^ However, might be a bit hard since you said it was more of a doodle, so not sure how serious my comment will be in comparison! I'll probably end up confusing you because I'm not sure of the exact words to describe what I mean. >W<

First, love the over all color palette you chose for this piece. You captured the feel of woods really well! Calm and nature like. It's very well done. Even the sky has it's own unique feel to it. :aww:I know you told me what program you actually used, (photoshop or SAI was it right?) So I'll try to comment based on that.

There's actually one thing I realize with your work. I think perhaps adding more highlights would be a good idea. The trees/grass/etc would really feel 3D and come to life if it had highlights. I usually achieve this by using dodge tool. (opposite of burn). I use it a lot in manga works because I really like the effect. I don't recommend it for realism though, Maybe very little.

I also want to comment on the grass and the flowers. First, the grass. There is a very very straight line with the grass, sky, and trees. Naturally, I would go in and add little pieces of grass sticking out along that line. This will help erase any flat feelings the piece will give. I don't know how else to explain it though. >W< But maybe try that out?

Last main thing: The flowers: I like technique you used. It's simple, but works easily. I use it a lot.  However, I feel like there should be a bit of definition under them. : ) Like put a layer under it, then use a brush that achieves a grass/bush like feel, and highlight with shadows/lights. Then, put the flowers on top and highlight/shadow them. I usually achieve that effect that way, an example would be here: glitteringpeaches.deviantart.c… and in other pieces in my gallery. Might not be the best cause of being old, but one of the ones I can think of. You don't have to use a brush ether though, you can use your own line work, but I use brush as I feel it comes out more natural. Then maybe adding in a bit of your own lines.

I also recommend using the scatter setting for the flowers. I'm not sure if you used it here, but if you did, it seemed to have been on very low scatter setting. Scatter setting will make it seem like it wasn't deliberately placed. So always make sure you get the setting to one that can give it that natural feel. Again, this can be done once more by hand too.

To finish this long critique off, I would also recommend bring the flowers to the bottom/bigger to help achieve a sense of perspective. :aww:

The lens flare was done very well though! I want to add that! Sometimes it can be hard to achieve that without it over powering an image way to much. So good job on that! All around, nice job! I really do like how you chose your color palette, and gave it a very calm nature like feeling. It really does capture that sense of forest. The shading on the trees are done well too! ^^ I'd just highlights along the edges to bring it out even more! : D

Over all, great job for a doodle! It turned out really well! Feel free to ask me any more questions, I hope this wasn't too straightforward. I also don't mind creating a quick tutorial for step by step with the flower thing if you need it. Just send a note over, it might be better to explain it that way than to try and explain in an essay. XD
